Otaki Sevens

20 Feb 2007

As the saying goes; "Full credit" to PC and BK from Rahui club for starting and running their very first sevens tournament. A few minor hiccups in the draw timings but all in all a successful day for them. We hope they continue this tournament next year.

Oriental Rongotai won the inaugrual Otaki Sevens on February 17th at Rahui Club,Otaki. Rahui were victorious in the plate. Ories played a very consistent style of sevens rugby and attacked at every opportunity.

The one thing to mar the day was the players who continue to think that foul play from head high tackles to shoulder charges will see them selected for higher honours. A pity the Refs weren't more stringent in their interpretation of this law. One yellow card all day. Interesting!.

It was good to see some familiar faces at this sevens.  Junior Tomasi Cama, NZ Sevens player, was seen observing play from the shady background. Esava Tiko, former Fijian 7s International, put on his boots for Manawatu's Freyberg team. Richard Bussey, Manawatu Sevens Player, is now turning out for Paraparaumu. Rangi, ex Kia Toa, now playing for Levin Wanderers was in devastating form and stepping well until a pulled hamstring finished his role in the tourney.
